On Monday 16th May, our students learned about Road Safety through the RACV Street Scene incursion. Click here to see some of the work students produced in response to what they learned.
On Monday, Nicky from RACV came to KHPS to talk to all the classes about road safety.
Some of the things we learned during our session were:
· When you are 5, 6 and 7 years old you must sit in a booster seat when going in the car.
· It is important that you are a quiet passenger in a car, bus or taxi so that you don’t distract the driver.
· When riding a bike you must always wear a helmet to protect your brain.
· You need to wait for Bob to blow his whistle twice at the school crossing before walking onto the road.
· When you are in a moving car you need to wear a seatbelt at all times in case the car stops really fast.
· You always need to stop, look, listen and think before crossing the road.
· When you are crossing the road at an intersection you must wait until the pedestrian lights are green to safely cross.
By 1/2M.
Some of the other grades learned the importance of STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK before they cross the road. Bike safety was also discusses including the importance of wearing a helmet, riding on the footpath versus riding on the road and being aware of your surroundings and 'reaction time' such as when cars are backing out of driveways. Did you know that if a car is backing out of a driveway it is the responsibility of the bike rider or pedestrian walking on the footpath to stop and give way?
The kids really enjoy their sessions and learned a great deal about being safe on and around roads.
A big thank you to Nicky from the RACV for running the sessions.
