Our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students had an amazing time on their two-night camp to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat this week, stepping back in time to experience life during the Gold Rush of the 1850s.
Once we arrived at Sovereign Hill, the adventures began! Students tried their luck at panning for gold, searching through the dirt and water in the hope of finding some treasure of their own. Those lucky enough to strike gold even got to keep what they found!
Students also took part in the Welcome to the Goldfields education session, learning about the people who travelled to the goldfields in search of their fortune. They watched a traditional confectionery demonstration and, of course, got to sample the famous raspberry drops! After dinner, everyone enjoyed a games night, with plenty of laughs and friendly competition during a game of Family Feud.
Day two was packed with even more exciting experiences. Students headed underground on the Red Hill Mine Tour, discovering what life was like for miners and learning about the challenges they faced in their search for gold. During the Gold Fever education session, students stepped into the roles of miners, gold buyers and troopers, exploring the highs and lows of the Gold Rush and learning how the events of the time led to the Eureka Rebellion in 1854.
The adventure continued with the Labyrinth of Gold, where students gained an insight into the lives of Ballarat’s miners as they searched for gold deep underground. They learnt about the conditions miners worked in, saw original nineteenth-century mine workings and discovered the equipment used during the Gold Rush. Travelling underground via the inclined tram made this an especially memorable part of the experience!
There were also opportunities to discover traditional skills and crafts. Students watched a candle-making demonstration before having a go at making their own candles, learning about an important everyday skill from a time before electricity. They also watched gold being melted down and poured into a single ingot.
During their free time exploring Sovereign Hill, students enjoyed trying their hand at nine-pin bowling, visiting the shops, watching the redcoat soldiers, and catching the many live dramas taking place in the streets. There was always something happening around every corner!
After dinner, everyone gathered to enjoy the spectacular AURA night show, which brought the story of the Gold Rush and the people who shaped Victoria’s history to life through lights, sound, and special effects. It was a fantastic way to finish a busy day of exploring.
On our final day, students took part in the Living in the Past Society education session, where they explored what school life was like for children living during the Gold Rush. After one last morning of learning and discovery, it was time to pack up and head home.
There was certainly a lot to fit into three days! With so much to see and do, and plenty of hills to walk up and down, it is no surprise that we had some very tired students by the end of camp. Thankfully, there were also delicious meals, lots of time spent with friends and plenty of laughs along the way!
We’re planning a school working bee on Friday 20th November, straight after school until 5:00pm, and we’d love to see our KHPS community get involved! It’s a great opportunity to lend a hand, help improve our school environment and enjoy working together for the benefit of our students. Whether you can spare the whole afternoon or just a little time, every helping hand makes a difference. More details, including how to sign up and what jobs we’ll be tackling, will be shared soon. For now, save the date! | |

| The next special lunch will need to be changed slightly. Instead of avocado, cucumber will be used instead. This is due to a severe allergy in the school. As all the lunches are prepared together, the risk of cross contamination is too high. | ![]() |

SWPBS FocusOver the next two weeks, we will continue to focus on our school values of Respect and Responsibility as part of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) program. We encourage all students to practise these important behaviours every day:
By practising these behaviours consistently, we can help make KHPS a safe, respectful and welcoming place for everyone. Thank you for supporting our students to put our school values into action! Did you know? At KHPS, students receive SWPBS tickets to acknowledge their positive behaviour choices and celebrate when they demonstrate our school values. Every fortnight, students can visit our SWPBS Shop, proudly run by our Student Leaders, where they can spend their hard-earned tickets on rewards! It's a fun way to celebrate positive choices and encourage everyone to be respectful, responsible and resilient. |

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Karingal Heights Primary School is a proud Respectful Relationships school. Respectful relationships education is part of the Victorian Curriculum and delivered by all Victorian government schools. It supports students to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed for respectful relationships, and helps to build respect and equality across the entire school community. Research tells us that providing respectful relationships education at school can lead to positive impacts on students’ academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour and relationships. Our school uses the Department of Education’s evidence-based teaching and learning resources to teach our students about Respectful Relationships from Foundation to Grade 6. The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resources have 8 topics that teach students about emotional literacy, personal and cultural strengths, resilience, problem-solving, stress-management, help-seeking, gender norms and stereotypes and positive gender relations. If you have any questions about Respectful Relationships education, you can contact Jeremy Bodley or Victoria Freeman and visit the Victorian Government’s Respectful Relationships page: https://www.vic.gov.au/respectful-relationships |
