Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2026

Although the official NAIDOC Week celebrations took place during the school holidays, we were proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week together at KHPS last week.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It encourages all Australians to learn more about the world's oldest continuing cultures and to reflect on the importance of respect, understanding, and reconciliation.

This year's theme, "50 Years of Deadly," marks the five decades of the national NAIDOC movement.It's also a tribute to the people who built this movement, the Elders who stood firm, the organisers who made space, the artists who turned resistance into expression, and the communities who keep showing up, year after year.

Throughout the week, students explored the significance of NAIDOC Week in a variety of ways. In their classrooms, they learned about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and contributions. During PE, students enjoyed participating in traditional Indigenous games and in Art, students created beautiful clay wall hangings using natural materials to make impressions, celebrating the connection between people, culture, and Country. In Performing Arts, students listened to music and learned about culture and story of Indigenous artist Baker Boy before learning a dance inspired by his music.

All students also received a special bookmark featuring artwork by Daisy Hill, an Aboriginal artist and proud Muruwari woman from north-western New South Wales, now living on Yugambeh Country on the Gold Coast.

It was a wonderful week of learning, reflection and celebration across our school.

The Gaga Pit is Almost Here!
The students' fundraising efforts over the past year are finally paying off—the Gaga Pit is almost here! To help keep costs down, we have decided to build the pit ourselves, and we're excited to share that the timber has arrived! Mr. Bodley has been meticulously measuring and cutting each piece to the correct length and angle, and we're nearly ready for the exciting part... construction! We'll be assembling the Gaga Pit in its temporary location on Thursday 30 July, starting at 2:30 pm and continuing until the job is done. We'll send out a ClassDojo message next week asking for volunteers. If you're handy with tools—particularly drills and impact drivers—we would greatly appreciate your help for a few hours. Even if you're not confident using tools, we'd still love some extra hands to help with lifting, holding materials, and keeping the build moving. This Gaga Pit has been made possible through the hard work and fundraising efforts of our students, and we can't wait to see them enjoying it very soon. Thank you in advance to everyone who is able to lend a hand!

Volunteers Needed - KHPS 50th Anniversary Fete! The 50th Anniversary Fete Committeee is looking for amazing volunteers to help make this special day a success. There are plenty of ways you can help, including: Setting up and packing down Running stalls (popcorn, fairy floss and more) Cash handling Helping at the BBQ Plus lots of other fun roles throughout the day! Whether you can spare a couple of hours or the whole day, we'd love to have you on board. Every helping hand makes a huge difference and helps create a fantastic day for our school community. School Concert 2026

Karingal Heights Primary School is thrilled to present our whole school concert, The Time Travel Assembly, this Thursday evening. Our students and staff have been working incredibly hard, and we can't wait to share this special performance with our school community.

COSTUMES:

To help keep costs to a minimum, classroom teachers are planning costumes around clothing items that most students already have at home.

Plain white T-shirt
Black pants (leggings, tracksuit pants or plain black trousers)
Comfortable shoes (preferably plain black or white sneakers)

The school will provide additional costume accessories for each class. Families are welcome to add extra items to suit their child's class theme if they wish; however, there is no expectation to purchase anything new. Many suitable items can be found at home, borrowed from family or friends, or sourced from local op shops.

CONCERT EVENING – Thursday 13 August
Please read the following information carefully to help ensure the evening runs smoothly.

Student Performers

Students are to be dropped off at 5:30 pm at the McClelland College Performing Arts Centre.
All students must be signed in with a staff member at the entrance upon arrival.
Please arrive on time to allow staff sufficient time to organise students before the performance begins promptly at 6:00 pm.
Students should arrive wearing their costume. Please refer to your child's ClassDojo page for costume information. Students may also bring a named water bottle.
No messy food is to be brought into the Performing Arts Centre. If required, students may bring a small, packaged snack, such as a muesli bar or small packet of chips. As there will not be time for students to eat dinner during the evening, we recommend they have a meal before arriving.
At the conclusion of the performance (approximately 7:30 pm), students will return to the auditorium with their class. Parents and carers are asked to collect their child from their classroom teacher and sign them out before leaving the venue.

Audience Members

Access to the McClelland College Performing Arts Centre and car park is via Alexander Crescent.
The foyer will open to audience members from 5:45 pm.
Ushers will be available to assist you in finding your seat. Please ensure you are seated before the performance commences at 6:00 pm.
We kindly ask that audience members remain seated for the duration of the performance and avoid leaving the auditorium unless necessary.
Food and drinks are permitted only if they are in sealed containers. Please do not bring glass bottles or messy food into the auditorium.
Alcohol, smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on the venue grounds.
The performance will run for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. At the conclusion of the show, please wait in the foyer or outside the auditorium to collect your child, following the instructions provided by the announcer.

Photography and Filming

Families are welcome to take photographs and short videos of their own child during the performance. We kindly ask that any photos or videos taken are kept for personal use and are not shared on social media, out of respect for the privacy of other students and families.

To ensure all audience members can enjoy the performance, please remain seated while taking photos or videos and refrain from using flash photography, as it can distract our performers.

Schools Tree Day 2026

On Friday 24th July, our school celebrated Schools Tree Day, a special day dedicated to planting trees, caring for our environment, and learning about sustainability. This year marks 30 years of Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature-care event organized by Planet Ark.

Thanks to the generous support of Frankston City Council, we received a variety of native plants for our school. Throughout the day, each class took part in planting them in different areas around the school, learning about the importance of caring for our environment and giving the students the chance to help make our school grounds greener.

Schools Tree Day is part of Australia's National Tree Day celebrations and encourages students to get hands-on while making a positive difference to their local community. We look forward to watching our new plants grow and seeing the benefits they bring to our school for many years to come!

Wellbeing News

SWPBS Focus – Being Safe

At Karingal Heights Primary School, we continue to explicitly teach and reinforce the positive behaviours that help every student feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

Our SWPBS focus for the first fortnight of term is Being Safe. Throughout the next two weeks, students will be learning and practising how to:

Stay within classroom and school boundaries
Report problems or unsafe situations to a staff member
Move safely through the playground and corridors

By teaching these expectations consistently across the school, we help create a calm, predictable and safe environment where everyone can learn and play successfully.

We encourage families to support this learning by talking with your child about why these behaviours are important and how they help keep everyone safe at school.

Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce our school values of being Respectful, Responsible, Resilient and Safe.

Winter Attendance – Every Day Counts

Winter often brings coughs, colds and busy family schedules, making school attendance more challenging. However, every day at school is an opportunity for students to build friendships, develop new skills and continue their learning.

In Victoria, attendance below 90% is classified as chronic absence. Even absences that are explained can add up over time and impact a child's learning, confidence and sense of belonging at school.

If your child has:

A fever
Vomiting
A contagious illness

they should stay home until they are well enough to return. If they are otherwise well, we encourage them to attend school.

Family Tip:
If your child has missed several days of school, keep in touch with their teacher. Working together to create a positive "return to school" plan can help your child settle back into their routine with confidence.

If your family is experiencing health or other challenges that are affecting your child's attendance, please reach out. We are here to work alongside you and provide support to help your child attend school regularly and thrive.

A paper catalogue has been sent home.

Just a reminder that orders are due back by 30th July via Scholastic Loop online ordering system or by bringing the order form which is in the catalogue back to school in a sealed envelope.

Orders will be delivered to school and distributed to the students. There is also a GIFT function which you can select if you prefer orders to be sent to the front office for secret collection!

For every Book Club order placed, Scholastic gives back 15% of the order value to our school to purchase valuable educational resources via its Scholastic Rewards program.
