Reconciliation Week 2026

National Reconciliation Week is recognised every year from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the Reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively.

This week our school proudly recognised National Reconcilistion Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation.

The 2026 theme, 'All In', encourages everyone to be active participants in building respect, understanding, and stronger relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

Across the week, students took part in meaningful learning activities in their classrooms and specialist lessons.  In Art, students watched a video about National Reconciliation Week before creating their own indigenous-inspired dot paintings using colour and patterns expressing their appreciation of First Nations cultures.

Our Prep/1 students listened to the story 'Say Yes' by Jennifer Castles, which shares an important message about listening, kindness, inclusion, and standing together to make a positive change.  After discussing the story students completed a colouring activity  reflected that beautifully this year's theme, "All In."

Other classes explored Dreamtime stories as part of their History lesson, discovering the importance of storytelling in Indigenous cultures and how these stories connect people to land and community.

National Reconciliation Week reminds us that reconciliation is not just something we reflect on for one week of the year, it is something we can all be 'All In' for every day through our actions, words, and willingness to learn.

Junior Rangers Program 2026

On Wednesday 27th May, some of our Koorie students had the exciting opportunity to take part in the Junior Rangers Program at McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park, where they explored culture, connection to Country, and Indigenous perspectives through hands-on experiences and learning activities with Uncle Josh West.

Students enjoyed a bush walk where they learned about different native plants and leaves traditionally used by First Nations Peoples for food and medicine.  They also collected leaves and natural materials to create their own artwork inspired by the environment around them.

While exploring the sculpture park, students discussed the many different artworks and enjoyed connecting art with nature.  The students also created their own possum keychains and took part in a meaningful smoke ceremony, learning about its cultural importance.

It was a wonderful experience for our Koorie students to deepen their understanding of culture, community, and Country through such interactive and memorable activities.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2026

On Wednesday the 27th of May, our school was excited to take part in National Simultaneous Storytime, a special nationwide event where students across Australia all listen to the same book at the same time!  This wonderful annual event, organised by the Australian Library and Information Association, encourages children across the country to come together to celebrate the joys of reading and storytelling.

This year's featured book was Luna Roo by Adam Jackson and Adrian Llyod, a delightful story that captures students' imagination with its beautiful illustrations and engaging storyline.  Our wonderful Prep/1 teacher Mrs. D, read the story aloud while the students followed along with the pages displayed on the big screen.

The story follows the spirited Kangaroo Luna and her friends on their adventure across the outback as they chase their football dreams.  This story encourages students to think about curiosity, friendship, and the world around them.  It captures the spirit of rising to a challenge with heart and grit.  It is a powerful celebration of courage, self-belief, and pushing through when things get tough, and how to navigate nerves, tricky opponents, and unexpected hurdles which many kids face every day.

Following the story, the students created a medal which had a personal goal on it which was inspired by the book.

Being On Time and Ready to Learn

Attendance also means arriving on time.

Arriving late:

  • Can cause worry
  • Disrupts learning
  • Means missing important instructions and morning ready to learn routines

Just 10 minutes late each day adds up to nearly one full week of learning lost over the year.

Morning Success Tips:

  • Prepare school bags and lunches the night before
  • Lay out uniforms before bed
  • Aim to arrive 5–10 minutes early

Every Day Counts at Karingal Heights Primary School.

If your child will be absent or arriving late, please call 9789 3288.

SWPBS Focus – Being Safe

Over the next two weeks, our SWPBS focus is all about being safe at school. Students will be learning and practising how to:

  • Ask permission before leaving the classroom

  • Use play equipment properly

  • Follow adult instructions

These expectations help create a safe, respectful and supportive environment for everyone. We encourage families to chat with their child about how they can show safe behaviours both at school and at home. Thank you for continuing to support our positive school values!

District Cross Country 2026

On Friday the 22nd of May some of our students from Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 proudly represented our school at the annual District Cross Country event held at Ballam Park competing against other schools from around our local area.

The course was not easy, with many hills and uneven grass areas, and plenty of twists and turns challenging students along the way.  Despite this, all of our students gave their best effort, encouraged one another, and displayed excellent sportsmanship.  While none of our runners finished in the top ten this time, every student that took part pushed through the tough conditions and demonstrated outstanding resilience.

We are incredibly proud of all students who participated and represented our school.  Well Done!

Free resources for families of adolescents aged 10 to 14 years.

The Department of Education has launched an Easing into adolescence webpage for families of students aged 10 to 14 (Grade 5 to Year 8).

The webpage has information and strategies you can use to help ease your child into adolescence and secondary school. These include:

  • a guide to emotion coaching. Staff from The University of Melbourne’s Tuning in to Teens Kids program developed the guidance.
  • how to support your adolescent with their studies and more generally. Parenting expert and clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller helped develop this resource.

Subtitles for videos by The University of Melbourne on the webpage are available in 10 languages. You can select your preferred language on the translations page.

For questions about these resources, contact the Strategic Partnerships, Transitions and Student Voice team. You can email them at Secondary.School.Transition@education.vic.gov.au.
