Celebrating Naidoc Week 2025

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

This year’s National NAIDOC Week marks 50 years of the week-long celebrations, and the theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, celebrates achievements of the past and the bright future ahead.

As this years celebration occurs over the school holiday period from the 6th of July - 13th of July, at Karingal Heights the students have been commemorating NAIDOC week this week by participating in a range of activities related to First Nations culture and history.

During PE, the students participated in traditional indigenous games that were not only fun but also teach teamwork and strategy.  Some of the games played include:
  • Kai: A Torres Strait Islands game where players form a circle and hit the ball upwards to each other using the palm of the hand.
  • Boogalah: A ball game where players throw a ball high into the air and their team attempt to catch it without moving.
  • Diyari Koolchee: A game where a ball is rolled to rebound off a wall to try and hit a skittle.
  • Mer Kolap: This game from the Torres Strait Islands involves throwing objects such as bean bags into a target.
  • Munhanganing: This game involves dodging and chasing, similar to tag, but with unique rules that reflect traditional hunting techniques.
  • Tarnambai: This is a running and chasing game in which a ball is rolled and a team mate run after it and returns to the finish line.
  • Buroinjin: This is team game where players run and pass the ball until a team crosses the line at the other end.
These activities give the students an appreciation of Indigenous cultures and their heritage of games and sports.

In art classes, the students started an Indigenous inspired mural of an Eagle and learned the meanings and significance of Aboriginal art and symbols and then used these symbols to decorate leaves to create a Leaf Wreath.  A Leaf Wreath is usually created to retell stories of cultural significance.

In Music the students watched a video of Indigenous musicians telling a Dreamtime Story about Kangaroos through dance and the ancient voice of the Didgeridoo.  They then had a chance to be kangaroos like shown in the video whilst listening to the song again.

During LOTE, students decorated paper boomerangs with indigenous symbols to create their own story and when finished, they watched an episode of Little J and Big Cuz where they talked about NAIDOC Week.

In addition to PE, Art, LOTE and Music students also engaged in various classroom activities such as Indigenous inspired colouring and word searches as well as listening to Dreamtime stories to help the students understand the values, traditions and history of Indigenous people.

Term 2 Acknowledgements

Term 2 has come to a close and I would like to take this time to acknowledge some different groups of people for the efforts that made this term great.

A huge thank you goes to the fundraising committee and their volunteer group. This term, the committee have spent a huge amout of time providing fundraising and experiences for the students. Throughout the term, they; organised and ran the first Mother's Day stall in 8 years, ran a very successful election day BBQ, and put on a number of special treat and special lunch days for the school. The chicken and gravy rolls were exceptionally delicious!

Thank you to the couple of parents/grandparents who regularly came in and did gardening, pruning and mowing throughout the term. Your efforts really keep the school looking great.

This term, there have been a few parents/carers who have been helping with breakfast club. Thank you for your assistance. It has made it so much easier to run, especially with how many students attend the club.

Acknowledgement needs to go to the staff at KHPS. Throughout the term, they have needed to be flexible and make many changes to ensure the children participated in all the extra experiences that were on offer this term. The students particiapted in; a Legacy Day excursion, athletics days, cooking, Japanese Day, swimming, enviroment day, Life Education, STOMP dance experience, wellbeing dog sessions, NAIDOC week, school showcase and other grade specific experiences. All of this while still managing to teach a fantastic curriculum.

Thank you to everyone who makes KHPS so great.

Kind regards,
Jeremy Bodley

AUSLAN at KHPS

Next term, we welcome a new staff member to the KHPS team.

Ms. Thomas has been employed as an AUSLAN teacher.

AUSLAN will be replacing Japanese as our Language Other Than English (LOTE) subject.

Reminder:
New gate opening times

Next term, we will be opening the gates to the school earlier. We are noticing an incresing number of children playing in the park area, some without parent supervision. Everyone is welcome on to the school grounds earlier. It would preferable that any of the students without parent supervision try and come at 8:45am but if they are coming earlier, could parents/carers please ask them to go in to the school gounds to play?

The playground will be open by 8:30am.

Important for parents/carers to note: Even though students can access the grounds earlier, the playground will not be supervised by a staff member until 8:45am.

Students are welcome to come inside for any medical or incidents.

KHPS Showcase and Academic Endeavor Awards

KHPS Showcase: An Afternoon of Talent and Celebration

On Thursday afternoon, the 3rd of July our school was filled with music, applause and proud smiles as we held our KHPS Showcase, a fantastic afternoon celebrating the musical talents and efforts of our students.

Families, friends and staff gathered to enjoy a wonderful line up of musical performances.  Each class and our school choir took to the stage to sing two songs each which included some favourites such as Monkey in a Teapot, Circle of Life, Johnny Works with One Hammer, I Can See Clearly Now, Row Row Row Your Boat, Roar, A Sailor Went to Sea, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Down By the Bay, Roar and Ram Sam Sam.

The students performed with confidence and enthusiasm, showcasing the hard work and practice they have put in during music lessons this term.

A big thank you to our amazing Performing Arts teacher, Mrs. Freeman for organising the Showcase, and to our audience for coming and supporting our young performers.  What a wonderful way to celebrate the end of Term 2!

Alongside the performances, we also took the opportunity to present our Term 2 Academic Awards, recognising students who have made outstanding achievements across a range of learning areas.  These awards celebrate hard work, progress, and perseverance, and we are very proud of all the recipients.

Rest, Reset and Recharge These Holidays

As we come to the end of a busy and productive term, we encourage all students and families to take the upcoming school holidays as a chance to rest, reset and recharge.

School holidays are a valuable time to slow down, enjoy quality moments with family and friends, and take a well-earned break from the routines of school life. Whether it’s getting outdoors, exploring a new hobby, or simply relaxing at home, time to unwind is essential for wellbeing and growth.

We hope everyone enjoys a safe and restful break, returning refreshed and ready to thrive in Term 3!
