Swimming Week 2025

Splashing into swimming!

Last week, our students took part in an exciting week of swimming lessons at PARC pools.  The program ran over five days and offered a mix of fun, fitness, and essential learning.  The students got involved in building confidence in the water, learning important swimming techniques, and practicing how to stay safe around the water.

Students were placed in ability based groups, allowing them to learn at their own pace with others at a similar skill level.  The daily 45 minute lessons, led by qualified swimming instructors, included a range of skills from floating and kicking, to water safety and basic stroke development.  It was wonderful to see the students giving it their all and improving more and more each day.

Part of the program focused on water safety, a crucial aspect that ensures our students not only enjoy their time in the water, but do so safely.  Some of the water safety skills they learnt included floating and treading water, safe entry and exit and basic rescue techniques.

Well done to all of our swimmers for showing great enthusiasm and resilience in the pool!

Showcase perfomace

We are holding an after school performance next Thursday 3rd July at 3:30pm. The students from all grades will showcase some of the songs that they have been working on in Perfoming Arts.

We will start the performance with a special assembly to present the Academic Endeavour awards for this term.

Please refer to the article in this newsletter for more details.

IMPORTANT:
* Students will stay with their classroom teacher at 3:15 to prepare for the performance.
* If your child is unable to participate, please contact the classroom teacher before 3:15 on that Thursday or come and collect them from their classrooms at the final bell.

New gate opening times

Next term, we will be opening the gates to the school earlier. We are noticing an incresing number of children playing in the park area, some without parent supervision. Everyone is welcome on to the school grounds earlier. It would preferable that any of the students without parent supervision try and come at 8:45am but if they are coming earlier, could parents/carers please ask them to go in to the school gounds to play?

The playground will be open by 8:30am.

Important for parents/carers to note: Even though students can access the grounds earlier, the playground will not be supervised by a staff member until 8:45am.

Students are welcome to come inside for any medical or incidents.

State Library Victoria Book Bash!

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Premiers' Reading Challenge, students from Grades 3 to 6 took part in Book Bash, an exciting online event funded by the Education Department and ran by the State Library of Victoria.

Over a course of three days, students tuned into free, one hour live streamed sessions from their classrooms, connecting with some of Australia's most popular and inspiring authors, Anh Do, Sally Rippin and Amelia Mellor.

Anh Do is one of Australia’s most loved success stories. He has been Australia’s best-selling author 5 years in a row with over 10 million book sales. (WeirdoSmarty PupNinja KidWolf Girl)

Sally Rippin is the current Australian Children’s Laureate (2024-2025) and one of Australia’s highest-selling female authors. She has written over 100 books for children and young adults, many of them award-winning. (Billie B BrownSchool of MonstersHey Jack)

Amelia Mellor is the author of the award-winning Grandest Bookshop Trilogy, a fantasy series for ages 9-13 based on Melbourne history. Her new five-part middle grade fantasy series, Oceanforged, begins in August 2025 with The Wicked Ship. (Grandest Bookshop Trilogy)

The sessions gave students the opportunity to learn about the different authors' writing process, where they get their ideas, and what it's like to create the stories we all know and love.  From hilarious tales to magical adventures, the authors shared tips, answered questions, and encouraged the students to keep reading and writing.

As part of these writing workshops, students completed different activity sheets, one of which was designed to encouraging the students to use their imagination and create their very own superhero and then write a story about that character.  During another one of the sessions, Sally Rippin guided the students through fun directed drawing activities of some of the characters from her books.

Book Bash was a fantastic way to celebrate Australian literature and inspire our young readers and storytellers!

SWPBS

SWPBS Focus – Weeks 9 & 10: Respect

At Karingal Heights Primary School, our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) focus for Weeks 9 and 10 is Respect.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll be guiding students to reflect on what it means to show respect in everyday situations. Our key behaviour expectations include:

  • Asking permission before touching someone else’s property

  • Treating others with kindness and respect

Respecting others means valuing their belongings, their personal space, and their feelings. Students will be reminded that even small actions—like asking before borrowing something or using polite and inclusive language—can make a big difference in creating a safe and supportive school environment.

Teachers will be reinforcing these behaviours in the classroom and playground through class discussions, role plays, and positive recognition.

Families can support this focus at home by talking with your child about ways to show respect in different situations—at school, at home, and in the community.

Let’s continue to work together to build a culture of respect across our school!
