Exploring 2D and 3D Shapes in Maths!

These last few weeks, our junior school have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes in maths.  Through hands on activities, students have been investigating the properties of shapes and learning how to identify and classify them based on their sides, edges, faces and verticies.

Firstly the students focused on 2D shapes such as triangles, squares and circles, discovering how these flat shapes can fit together to form patterns and pictures.  They enjoyed creating their own designs and identifying shapes in everyday objects around them.

Following that,  the students explored 3D shapes like cubes, spheres, pyramids and cylinders.  During these lessons, they discussed why some shapes can roll, slide or stack, helping them to understand the shapes structure.  They also enjoyed sorting 3D shapes by their differnt features and matching 3D shapes or objects with their names.  On Friday, P1D used various 3D shaped objects to construct their own model rockets, combining creativity and their newfound knowledge of geometry.

Check out the gallery below of the creative ways they students have been using 2D and 3D shapes in the classroom!
