Crazy Hair Day 2024

On Thursday the 23rd of May, our school was transformed into a dazzling display of creativity and colour for our Crazy Hair Day!  The classrooms were buzzing with excitement as the students proudly showcased their wild and wacky hairstyles.  Some of the hairstyles included colourful mohawks and hair decorated with bows and spiral pipe cleaners.  It was great to see how much effort and imagination the students (and their parents/carers) put into their crazy creations!

Crazy Hair Day wasn't just about having fun, it was also an opportunity to raise money for a new basketball court at KHPS!  Thank you to all the parents and carers who assisted with hair preparation and for your gold coin donations!

National Simultaneous Storytime 2024

On Wednesday the 22nd of May our Junior school students and teachers gathered together in the BER to listen to Mrs D read 'Bowerbird Blue' and then join in a literacy activity related to the story as part of National Simultaneous Storytime.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an Australia wide group reading and literacy event where schools, libraries and other institutions gather school age children together on the last Wednesday in May to read the same chosen picture story book at the same time!  This year, the book chosen is 'Bowerbird Blue' by Aura Parker.

Bowerbird Blue is a charming tale about a young bowerbird named Blue.  Bowerbirds are known for building beautiful nests, or bowers, to attract mates.  Blue is different from other bowerbirds.  Instead of using colours like yellow and green, he loves the colour blue!  Blue's adventures teach us about being unique and true to ourselves.  It encourages children to embrace their differences and be confident in who they are.  Blue shows the children that it is ok to be different and that our uniqueness makes us special.

After listening to the story, the students were asked to find one thing each from their classroom that was blue and place it at the front of the BER.  Then the students were given a picture of the bowerbird from the story and they had to draw different blue items around it to represent the bowerbird's collection of blue things.

Cooking Classes are back!

Our school has been lucky enough to have Granny Sue volunteer her time and knowledge to conduct a series of cooking classes for our students!

Twice a term Sue will visit our school and offer students a hands on experience in the kitchen, where they will learn how to prepare simple and delicious food.  These classes aim to teach essential cooking skills, promote healthy eating and encourgae creativity in the kitchen.
Learning to cook can help inspire confidence and independence in children, as well as promoting teamwork.

This week they had fun making delicious Savory Scones.  The smell coming out of the school kitchen was amazing!

Hopefully your child comes home with one for you to taste!  If not, here is the recipe if you want to make them at home!

Premiers' Reading Challenge 2024

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Karingal Heights PS is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2024.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
