Spotlight on STEM

Education Week is an annual celebration of eduaction in Victoria and this year it is during the week of the 13th of May until the 17th of May.  This theme for this year is Spotlight on STEM, which highlights the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in our everyday lives.

This week in STEM the students had to incorporate problem solving into an Engineering design challenge.

P1D had to use Lego to make the first letter of their name, 12W and 34S had a Lego challenge calendar to work through where they had to use Lego to create different things.  456H had fun doing a science experiment where they were challenged to see how many bubbles they could make joined together by blowing gently through a straw.

This Term in Music

Music education provides children and young people with a range of developmental benefits. It enhances engagement and wellbeing, increases personal and social development, and improves outcomes in other curriculum areas.

In Music lessons at KHPS this term, students have engaged in dancing to different styles of music from hip hop, line dancing to folk dances.

They have also begun learning to identify notes and play familiar melodies on keyboards and glockenspiels. Classes have also been learning to sing songs by Peter Combe in anticipation of his upcoming visit to KHPS.

Interesting music fact: A Stanford study shows that playing music engages areas of the brain which are involved with paying attention, making predictions, and updating events in our memory.

Please avoid bringing notices directly to the office

Could all notices, permission forms, special lunche orders, etc. please be handed to the classroom teachers and not brought directly to the office? Classroom teachers send any of the notices to the office in their daily cash bag.

When notices are handed directly to the office by parents or children, there is a chance they can be misplaced or not put with the correct grade.

If notices come to the office in the class cash bag, they are easily handled with less opportunity for it to be incorrectly filed. When the classroom teacher is the one collecting the notices, they have a better understanding around which children have brought things back and who is still needing to return something.

Current Notices

Please keep an eye out for the dates on the following notices:

* PARC swimming program notice - Due 22nd May.
* Crazy Hair Day notice

Premiers' Reading Challenge 2024

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Karingal Heights PS is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2024.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge
