Fire Education 2024

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) provides a program for primary schools local to FRV fire stations and KHPS are lucky enough to be one of those primary schools.

Fire Education is important for children who are in their first year of school as this is the age at which most children become able to effectively learn and utilise fire safety information when presented within a formal program.

The program delivered to the junior students was presented over two session.  To prepare for the Firefighters visit, the students read a picture book and completed worksheets which promoted awareness that firefighters are an integral part of the community as community helpers.

During the first firefighter visit to our school, the firefighters provided an interactive presentation about the following:
  • Firefighters are helpers
  • Good fires and bad fires
  • Crawl low in smoke
  • Safe meeting place
  • What is an emergency? 000 (Triple Zero)
After the first visit the students were asked to complete a safe meeting place worksheet to take home and complete with their families.

The firefighters then returned today for their last visit to revise the concepts of their visit, discuss and observe the students safe meeting place worksheets, introduce the concept 'Stop, Drop and Roll' and the most exciting part of the program, a visit to the fire truck!

  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2024.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
