ANZAC Day 2024

On Wednesday 24th of April our school leaders and 4/5/6H students spoke about the significance of ANZAC Day in a special commemorative assembly.  It is important that we take the time to reflect and be thankful to the many Australian men and women who have and are serving our country to keep us safe.

Anzac Day is one of Australia's most important national occasions which has been commemorated since 1916.  We commemorate rather than celebrate Anzac Day because we are remembering something that is important but also has sad feelings for many people.

ANZAC Day is held on the 25th of April and it marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the first World War.
ANZAC is an acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

ANZAC Day commemorates Australia's involvement in WWI and remembers anyone who has served in a war or conflict as well as those men and women serving in the Defence forces today.

On Anzac day we observe a minute's silence as a sign of respect and a time for reflection.  After the minute silence we say 'Lest we forget' which reminds us we must not forget.

Anzac Day Activities 2024

On Wednesday to commemorate Anzac Day the students created beautiful Anzac Day inspired art work.  They learned about the red Poppy flower which is a symbol of hope and regeneration in the face of destruction.

P/1D enjoyed making Anzac Biscuits which have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) established in WWI.  It is thought that these biscuits were sent by wives and women's groups to soldiers abroad because the ingredients in them did not spoil easily which meant they kept well during naval transportation.

Take a look at our gallery of the students helping Mrs D make some delicious Anzac Biscuits.

Premiers' Reading Challenge 2024

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Karingal Heights PS is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2024.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
