The Importance of Fine Motor Skills

What are fine motor skills?

Fine motor refers to the group of skills involved to manipulate smaller objects with the hands and fingers such as grasping, pinching and holding.  Fine motor skills are necessary for many aspects of self-care for children for example, putting on shoes or clothes, feeding themselves, and cleaning their teeth.  Fine motor skills are also critical for the development of writing.  The motor control to produce drawings, mark making and letter formation is vital for children to be able to communicate.

What do fine motor skills include?

Academic skills

  • Pencil skills (mark making, colouring, drawing, writing)
  • Scissor skills (cutting)

Construction skills

  • Lego, Duplo
  • Puzzels
  • Train tracks
  • Dressing dolls and teddies
  • Computer and iPad use
Self care skills

  • Dressing - tying shoelaces, doing up sandles, zips, buttons, belts
  • Eating - using cutlery, opening lunch boxes and food bags
  • Hygiene - cleaning teeth, brushing hair, toileting

How do we develop fine motor skills?

Developing the muscles in the arm right up to the fingertips provides children with the strength required to control the hand and fingers to support the beginning of the pincer grip useful for holding pencils and other small objects.  Fine motor skills can be developed through activities using materials to help build strength in the arms, hands and fingers.

Every morning in P1D, the students do a range of creative activitites which are both engaging and fun to help develop their fine motor skills.
Take a look at our gallery of the students doing different fine motor activities.

International Women's Day 2024

International Women's Day is an annual event that celebrates all the amazing things women have achieved and a way to show how women continue to influence the world.  As well as celebrating brilliant women, it is also a day to raise awareness about issues that women have faced in the past and still face today.

This years theme is 'Inspire Inclusion'which focuses on teaching our communities to value the inclusion of women as we create a better, more inclusive world for everyone.

There are many brilliant and influencial women to celebrate such as Jane Austen, a successful author who wrote books during a time people didn't believe women should work, Marie Curie who did groundbreaking research on radioactivity that lead to the treatment of many illnesses and was the first person to be awarded two Nobel Prizes and Malala Yousafzai who as a young girl was hurt that some people believed girls should not go to school.  She believed girls had a right to education and spoke out about her beliefs.  She was the youngest person to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

Lets celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievenments of women as well as all the significant women in our lives!

Dr Seuss Day 2024

Dr Seuss Day is recognised every year on 2nd March to mark the birthday of Theodor Seuss Giesel and celebrate his legacy, his work, and his contribution to literacy and creative writing.
Dr Seuss's stories are still loved today by many adults and children as they are full of wacky and wonderful scenarios.  His books are well know for their nonsense words, unusual characters and playful rhymes.
Dr Seuss's books inspire many adults and children to keep reading not just his books, but books in general!
Make sure next time you visit the library with your class have a look and enjoy the many Dr Suess books we have available!
