Sovereign Hill Camp 2023

Last week our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to go on a camp to Sovereign Hill in Ballart for 2 nights.  Sovereign Hill is a museum famous for the gold rush that happened in 1851.  Some of the biggest nuggets of gold were found here.

Whilst at Sovereign Hill the students experienced a range of stimulating and immersive indoor and outdoor activities which focused on the 1850s gold rush heritage and environment.

Some of these activities were 'Gold Fever' where the students join in role playing the experiences of miners, gold buyers and troopers to understand the highs and lows that led to the Eureka Rebellion in 1854 and 'Living in the Past' where the students got to explore the aspects of school life of the people living through the gold rush.

The students enjoyed watching confectionary and candles being made and also saw how gold was melted down and then poured into a single ingot.  During their free time around Sovereign Hill the students were able to have a go at nine pin bowling from the 1800s, go shopping, watch the red coat soldiers and view the many live dramas in the streets.

When night fell on the first night, the students sat to watch the 'AURA' sound and light show.  Under the darkness the sky and lake came alive and Sovereign Hill became a moving theatre with hundreds of hi-tech projections telling the story of how gold changed everything.   Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties the students didn't get to see the whole show.

The students also had the opportunity to be taught how to pan for gold and for those who were lucky enough to find some gold got to keep it!  They also explored the Red Hill mine and watched a funny pantomime show in the Victorian theatre.

There was so much to see and do at Sovereign Hill.  The students and staff had a wonderful time and came back to school exhausted.

Take a look at our gallery of all the fun activities the students took part in.

Cooking with Kids 2023

The kitchen was a very busy place last week.

While the campers were away the other students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 enjoyed a morning cooking with Mrs Peters.  The recipe of choice was 'Apple Crumble'.  The students helped peel and cut the apples, measure out and mix ingredients ready to be transferred into the baking trays.
Once the crumble was cooked the students got to taste thier hard work.

The P1D class also enjoyed some cooking to finish off their 'Farm' unit.  The students helped Mrs D make some delicious vegetable soup.

The smells coming from the kitchen last weeks were amazing!

School Notice Board - 1st December 2023

Family Fun Night & Christmas Carols
KHPS will be having a 'Family Fun Night' on Wednesday 13th December.

Gates open at 6:00pm for games and races.

Christmas Carols to start at 6:45pm.

Thank you to the college students
Over the past weeks, the front of the school has seen some subtle changes. The removal of the treated pine posts and the works around the school sign have made a great difference to the look of the school.

Thank you to the McClelland College garden program for their efforts to bring colour to the graden around the school sign. They put in a couple of days worth of digging and mulching to help the school.

Next year, we will plant out the area with some carefully selected plants and get a new sticker or resurface for the school sign.

Communicating With Families In Emergencies.
This bushfire season is a timely reminder for us to let you know how we will communicate with the school community in the event of an emergecy like a bush fire.

In the event of an emergency, the following will happen:
* Emails will be sent out.
* A Class Dojo message will be sent out.

If required, the school may phone individual families. (Depending on the situation)

School Beautification Groups
With 2 more Friday's to go, it would be great to see a group of parents come and socialise while helping to make the school look fantastic.

The gardens will be the big focus before the holidays. We could really use some help preparing some planter boxes, spreading soil and spreading mulch.

We would love to have you around the grounds. Please consider reaching out to join us for Maintenance Friday's.
11:30am onwards
