Child safety at Karingal Heights Primary School

The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing.

Karingal Heights Primary School has reviewed and updated our child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. These are available to view on our website:

We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and wellbeing and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures and practices.

BEING an UPSTANDER

An upstander is a person who speaks or acts in support of an individual, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied. An upstander promotes respectful behaviour and language towards others.

What we are exploring right now...

For the next 2 weeks, the children at KHPS will be exploring one of the 4 steps to being an upstander. They will be learning about SHIFTING THE FOCUS.

What is shifting focus?
Trying to interrupt and shift the focus of the individual causing harm. This could be asking them to go for a walk, play a game or ask if you can help out. Try to divert their attention away. You could also ask the person who is being harmed to sit with you, or walk away with them.
